Every year, as a country we use enough water to fill the Sydney Harbour 48 times over. In fact, despite being the most arid we use more water per person than anywhere else in the world.
70% of Australia is classified as arid which is why 80% of us live, work and bathe on the coast. In places like Main Beach, Clear Island Waters, Mudgeeraba, Tallebudgera Valley and Currumbin – just to name a few.
The average Gold Coaster will spend more than 30% of their water bill singing in the shower, lose three years of their life sitting on a toilet and use 76 litres of hot water per day.
In areas like Palm Beach, Currumbin and Bonogin – rainwater can be used when washing clothes, for laundry taps and outside to help your growing garden. But If we were to travel inland, rain water is used for everything – showering, brushing your teeth and even drinking.
So how can we help save every last drop…
Look at installing new showerheads – Water-efficient showerheads can save over 10,000 litres of water each year. If you have an old or leaky showerhead ask us about replacing it = massive water savings.
Capitalise on water-efficient appliances like dishwashers and front-loaders – A dishwasher only uses around 4,380 litres vs hand washing at 36,500 litres per year. A front-loader can operate with 50% less water than top – look at the 5 star water-efficiency rating.
Fix those leaking taps – A leaking tap drips once per second for a day wastes about 30 litres of water. If you waited a year that’s 10,950 litres of water and $$$ down the drain.
Next time you turn on the tap or go to put on half a load, remember that almost 95% of the water will end up down the drain. So think about the things you can do around your home with your family to improve this. If your drainage is easily accessible, why not think about installing a grey water system and save the waste?
